Grey Hair The Undiscovered Jewel
By soozeqsh
"Sail on silver girl Sail on by. Your time as come to shine. All your dreams are on their way. See how they shine." Singer/Songwriter, Paul Simon.
Grey hair is generally assumed to be something that everyone wants to hide. Could it be that the beauty industry and society as a whole is wrong? Isn't the idea that grey hair is something that needs to be covered up an odd way of looking at a natural beautiful stage of the aging process?
So, let's pretend that glorifying grey hair would be profitable for the beauty industry. And, after all, it could be profitable. Grey hair could be adorned by having contrasting shades of low-lights woven into the hair. Grey also provides a neutral palette for accessorising the hair with colorful barrettes or ribbons. Older women could celebrate their age and adorn their hair with jewels which would look great with grey.
Younger woman might even want grey hair. A whole new color challenge for beauticians could be born by streaking hair with grey or taking someone from brown, black or blonde to grey and covering the regrowth. I can envision a whole new world of possibilities for grey. It could be "the" new fashion statement.
Not all women will look good with grey hair, but this presents yet another opportunity for the beauty industry -- developing makeup palettes that are specially designed for women with grey hair. And, consider toners designed to enhance grey hair and give it a different look without covering up the grey. The possibilities are endless.
The biggest dilemma is how to grow out the grey hair once you have colored it. Every hairdresser I have ever consulted has always told me the same thing "you don't want to let your grey hair grow in, you'll look older". This is yet another creative challenge for hair colorists and chemists. Come up with a product to color hair grey.
The other argument I have heard is that grey isn't really a color. Grey isn't a color? Blonde isn't really a color either but somehow the beauty industry is able to create an endless spectrum of shades of blonde to suit just about any woman who fantasizes herself to be a blonde bombshell. Speaking of blonde, it seems to be the most often suggested solution for covering grey hair. I can say without a doubt that blonde is not suitable for all greying woman, especially those over 50 with wrinkled skin. I would argue that grey looks more suitable on older women than does over bleached, dry, dull blonde hair.
Will it take a rebellion or just the wit of a creative marketing genious to let the cat out of the proverbial bag. Grey hair is really quite attractive. It doesn't make a woman look older than she is, it makes her look her age. If she is young and grey, she will look young and grey. If she is older and grey she will look older and grey. And what is wrong with that?

Grey hair is a fashion, too! I have had a superior; she had her strand of grey hair since she was young. It bother her at first but accepted it as part of her uniqueness. Congratulations on your HubNugget nomination. :D
Boy, the day grey hair becomes fashionable and the beauty industry figures out how to not make it make me look 10 years older than I am...then I'm all over it. I got my first grey hair at 15 years old as premature grey hair runs in our family. I unfortunately don't have thick good looking hair, so going totally white/grey isn't going to happen any time soon. Good Hub and congrats on your HubNugget nomination
Hiya soozeqsh, Congratulations on having this hub on grey hair as a Hubnugget Nominee. I enjoyed reading this beautiful hub. A well-deserved nomination. Although I'm not sure if I would look good in grey, you got a valid point. All the best to you.
Happy Holidays,
Rosie
Teddletonmr, thanks. My point of view doesn't always coincide with society's, appreciate your input.
travel_man1971 Thanks for your input and support!
megmccormick - Thanks for your comments and support. Much appreciated.
Rosie - Being new to Hub Pages I appreciate your comment. I guess I better learn what a Hubnugget Nominee is.
Absolutely love your article and congratulations on your Hubnugget nomination! I love gray and why not as a hair color. If we look to color forecasts for 2011 in other areas like fashion design and decor gray is hot! Why not consider it for our hair style.
Iris,
Thanks, who would know better about color?
I am still trying to cover up my greys, but suppose I will have to eventually surrender - and your hub makes it that much easier. Congrats on the nomination and good luck.
elayne001 - let those greys sparkle. Thanks for your supportive comment.
This is a lovely hub on an always topical subject! At the bus stop the other day I over heard a young boy asking two young girls; "how can I get grey hair? I want that lovely grey/blue hair" and the girls responded; don´t know, I don´t think you can! An older women standing beside, smiled and said to the boy; just wait, you will get it sooner or later! So, maybe, if we are many that want grey hair, it can be hot fashion! Awesome hub, and a good point! I will considering something else next time I have to hide them! Voted up!
Thougtforce,
I love the bus stop story! Thanks for your comment, much appreciated.
What a timely hub. I am in what I call the zebra stage, not completely black and not completely gray. After coloring my hair for many years, I finally decided to let it all grow out and right now it's not a pretty sight, but I'm sure when the old color finally grows out and gets cut, my hair will look a whole lot better. Thanks for inspiring me to go through with it all the way.
Faithful Daughter - thank you for your comment and best to you for being one of the brave souls to struggle through the growing out stage.
Oh, I like your idea!
You are right also, the entire
cosmetics industry would be
catering for the marketshare.
Grey hair can be attractive, greying not so much.
Love the hub. I have been greying since I was 23 and have never bothered to try to hide it
onegoodwoman - thats for your comment, much appreciated.
Koronher - Thanks for reading and appreciate your comment.
I kind of think the grey look has more appeal to persons look.
My paternal grandmother had white hair from the time she was in her mid-30's and I thought it was beautiful. I don't try and cover my grey and I actually think that grey hair is a softer look and more natural as one ages. But looking around, I guess that is a minority opinion. Oh well...just look at the time and money I am saving by not trying to fight it! :-) Congratulations on the Hubnugget nomination!
patlesaux - appreciate your comment. Happy and healthy new year to you.
Peggy W - you are so right, you are saving lots of time and money. I appreciate your input. Happy New Year.
I love grey hair even when I was in my early 20's I use to buy grey wigs they were white wgs actually. :)
I am grey now and tint my hair. when I do wear my hair grey women say you are not a grey person. My husband love my grey hair and so do I.
Constance - You sound like a woman with a mind of her own. I like that! Happy New Year to you and your husband.
Grey hair is beautiful! My grand-mother has the most shiny head of grey hair I've ever seen... looks silver actually, it makes her look so distinguished, and regal.
Greys are starting to speckle my head also and I really cannot wait for it to become fully grey because if it looks anything like my grand-mother's I'll definitely be wearing it with pride! So far it's starting to look like my greys match hers so bring them on!!! ;0)
Great Hub Soozeqsh!
My mother has great grey hair and she gets comments all the time. Let your silver shine! Thanks for your kind comments.
I think it's the quality of the hair.If I had more it could be any clour!!
